- Lire les fractions simples (a half, a third, three quarters)
« Grace, I am the… two in my class! »
Grace rit : « You mean you are second! Congratulations! »
Elle continue : « And my friend Alpha is the three… no… the threeth? » Nouvelle erreur !
Le soir, en révisant son histoire, elle lit dans un livre en anglais : Guinea became independent on the 2nd of October 1958. Pourquoi « 2nd » ?
2Je comprends
1. Cardinal ou ordinal ?
- Le cardinal compte : *I have two brothers.* (combien ?)
- L'ordinal classe : *My second brother lives in Labé.* (à quel rang ?)
L'ordinal répond à des questions comme Which one? (lequel ?) ou In what position? (à quelle place ?).
2. Les trois premiers : des formes à part
| Cardinal | Ordinal | Abréviation |
|---|---|---|
| one | first | 1st |
| two | second | 2nd |
| three | third | 3rd |
3. La règle générale : on ajoute -th
À partir de 4, on ajoute -th au cardinal : four → fourth, six → sixth, seven → seventh, ten → tenth, eleven → eleventh, thirteen → thirteenth, hundred → hundredth. L'abréviation est nombre + th : 4th, 6th, 10th, 13th.
|---|---|---|
| five | fifth | ve → f |
| twelve | twelfth | ve → f |
| eight | eighth | on ajoute seulement h (un seul t) |
| nine | ninth | on enlève le e |
| twenty | twentieth | y → ie + th |
| thirty, forty… | thirtieth, fortieth… | y → ie + th |
- 21st : *twenty-first* ; 22nd : *twenty-second* ; 23rd : *twenty-third* ; 24th : twenty-fourth ;
- 101st : *one hundred and first* ; 365th : *three hundred and sixty-fifth*.
- 1 (sauf 11) : first
- 2 (sauf 12) : second
- 3 (sauf 13) : third
- 11, 12, 13
- tous les autres
- 1st, 21st, 31st, 101st
- 2nd, 22nd, 42nd
- 3rd, 23rd, 53rd
- 11th, 12th, 13th
- 4th, 15th, 20th, 100th
- Je mets en général the devant l'ordinal : the second, the 21st.
Exemple
Write the ordinal in words and as an abbreviation: 5, 12, 20, 33, 99.
5 → fifth → 5th (five devient fif-).
12 → twelfth → 12th (twelve devient twelf-).
20 → twentieth → 20th (y devient ie).
33 → thirty-third → 33rd (seul le dernier mot change ; il finit par third).
99 → ninety-ninth → 99th (nine perd son e).
6. Les emplois des ordinaux
a) Le rang, le classement : Kadiatou is second in her class. Guinea finished third in the group. On met souvent the : She was the first to arrive.
- Oral : the second of October, nineteen fifty-eight (britannique) ou October the second ; en américain October second.
- Question : What's the date today? — It's the twenty-sixth of September. ; When is your birthday? — It's on the third of March. (on dit on devant une date)
Exemple
Read aloud: "Guinea became independent on 2nd October 1958."
Le jour est un ordinal : 2nd = second.
L'année se lit par paires : 1958 = nineteen fifty-eight.
Answer: "Guinea became independent on the second of October, nineteen fifty-eight."
My uncle lives on the third floor. (on dit on the … floor)
d) Les siècles : the twenty-first century (le XXIe siècle), the nineteenth century (le XIXe siècle). Rappel : le XXe siècle couvre les années 1901 à 2000 ; les années 1900 à 1999 s'écrivent aussi the 1900s.
e) Les rois, les papes, les numéros de titres : on écrit un chiffre romain, mais on lit un ordinal avec the : Elizabeth II = Elizabeth the Second ; Louis XIV = Louis the Fourteenth.
f) Les anniversaires et les éditions : my sixteenth birthday (mes seize ans), the tenth edition of the festival, the first time (la première fois).
g) Les classes : He is in the eleventh grade. (ou 11th grade).
- 13 : one third (ou a third) ; 23 : two thirds (ordinal au pluriel quand le numérateur est plus grand que 1) ;
- 15 : one fifth ; 38 : three eighths ;
A third of the students come from Kindia. Three quarters of the class passed the exam.
3Je retiens
Je retiens
Ordinal = rang : first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), puis nombre + th (4th, 10th…).
Orthographe : fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth, twentieth, thirtieth.
Nombres composés : seul le dernier mot change : twenty-first (21st), forty-second (42nd), ninety-third (93rd).
11th, 12th, 13th toujours en -th.
Dates : the second of October (2nd October 1958) ; on + date : on the 3rd of March.
Étages (GB) : ground floor = rez-de-chaussée ; first floor = 1er étage. Siècles : the twenty-first century.
Titres : Elizabeth II = Elizabeth the Second.
Fractions : cardinal + ordinal : one third, two thirds ; a half, a quarter, three quarters.
4Erreurs fréquentes
- Dire « the two » ou « the threeth » pour un rang : on dit the second, the third.
- Mal écrire les ordinaux irréguliers : on écrit fifth, ninth, twelfth, eighth (et non fiveth, nineth, twelveth, eightth).
- Écrire 21th, 22th, 23th : on écrit 21st, 22nd, 23rd ; mais 11th, 12th, 13th.
- Dire la date avec un cardinal : on dit the second of October, pas the two October.
- Oublier le -s dans les fractions : two thirds, three fifths.
