  • Former et employer le comparatif (-er than, more… than, as… as) et le superlatif (the -est, the most)

*« Nzérékoré is a town big. The forests are greens and beautifuls. Mount Nimba is the more high mountain of Guinea. The people are very interesting and I am interesting by their culture. »*

*a big town, a kind woman, a Guinean dish.*

  • *a big town* (une grande ville) ; *a green forest* (une forêt verte) ; *an old man*.

  • *The forest is green. She looks tired. This mango tastes sweet.*

Remarque : après a / an, c'est la première lettre (le premier son) de l'adjectif qui compte : *an old car*, mais *a new car* ; *an interesting book*.

  • *a green forest → two green forests* (et non ~~greens~~) ;
  • a tall boy, a tall girl, tall children : toujours tall.
Français
  • une ville importante (après le nom)
  • des forêts vertes (accord)
  • une femme grande, des filles grandes
  • Elle est fatiguée.
Anglais
  • an important town (avant le nom)
  • green forests (invariable)
  • a tall woman, tall girls
  • She is tired.

1opinionbeautiful, nice, delicious, ugly
2taillebig, small, tall, long
3âgeold, new, young
4formeround, square, flat
5couleurred, green, white
6origineGuinean, African, Malian
7matièrecotton, wooden, metal
8usage (nom employé comme adjectif)cooking (pot), school (bag)

*a beautiful old blue Guinean cotton dress* ; *a big round wooden table*.

  1. 1Opinion : beautiful
  2. 2Taille : big
  3. 3Âge : old
  4. 4Forme : round
  5. 5Couleur : blue
  6. 6Origine : Guinean
  7. 7Matière : cotton

  • tall → taller than ; old → older than ;
  • orthographe : big → bigger (consonne doublée après voyelle courte), large → larger (e final), easy → easier (-y → -ier).

b) Adjectifs longs (deux syllabes ou plus, sauf -y) : more + adjectif + than.

  • beautiful → more beautiful than ; interesting → more interesting than.

c) Infériorité : less + adjectif + than (less expensive than) ou, plus souvent, not as… as (not as big as).

d) Égalité : as + adjectif + as : *Kadiatou is as tall as her brother.*

6. Le superlatif

a) Adjectifs courts : the + adjectif + -est : the tallest, the biggest, the easiest.

b) Adjectifs longs : the most + adjectif : the most beautiful, the most important.

Le complément se construit avec in devant un lieu ou un groupe : *the highest mountain in Guinea*, *the best student in the class* ; et avec of devant un pluriel ou une période : *the youngest of the three*.

c) Les irréguliers à connaître par cœur :

AdjectifComparatifSuperlatif
goodbetterthe best
badworsethe worst
farfarther / furtherthe farthest / the furthest
little (quantité)lessthe least
much / manymorethe most

Méthode

Pour comparer avec un adjectif :

  3. Comparatif : court + -er than ; long : more + adj + than ; égalité : as + adj + as.
  4. Superlatif : the + court + -est ; the most + long ; puis in + lieu ou groupe.
  5. Je vérifie l'orthographe : bigger, larger, easier, hottest.

Exemple

Complete with the comparative or the superlative.

a) The Niger is (long) river in West Africa. → superlatif, adjectif court : the longest.

b) Conakry is (big) than Kindia. → comparatif, court, voyelle courte + consonne : bigger.

c) This exercise is (difficult) than the first one. → long : more difficult.

d) My results are (good) than last year. → irrégulier : better.

e) Mount Nimba is (high) mountain in Guinea. → the highest.

Answer: the longest ; bigger ; more difficult ; better ; the highest.

7. Adjectifs en -ed et en -ing

Beaucoup d'adjectifs existent sous deux formes :

  • -ing : ce qui provoque le sentiment : *The film is boring.* (le film est ennuyeux) ;

interesting / interested, tiring / tired, exciting / excited, surprising / surprised, frightening / frightened.

Alpha voulait dire « je suis intéressé » : *I am interested in their culture* (et non ~~I am interesting~~, qui voudrait dire « je suis intéressant »).

Mais : The boy is ten years old (attribut : years au pluriel).

Adjectif substantivé : the + adjectif désigne un groupe de personnes, avec un verbe au pluriel : the poor (les pauvres), the rich, the young, the old, the sick. *The young are the future of Guinea.*

Exemple

Correct Alpha's text.

« Nzérékoré is a town big. » → épithète avant le nom : Nzérékoré is a big town.

« The forests are greens and beautifuls. » → invariable : The forests are green and beautiful.

« Mount Nimba is the more high mountain of Guinea. » → superlatif d'un adjectif court + in : Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Guinea.

« I am interesting by their culture. » → sentiment ressenti : I am interested in their culture.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Épithète avant le nom : a big town. Attribut après be, look, seem, feel… : The town is big.

L'adjectif est invariable : green forests, tall girls.

Ordre : opinion, taille, âge, forme, couleur, origine, matière, usage (a beautiful old Guinean cotton dress).

Comparatif : court + -er than (taller than) ; long : more + adj + than ; égalité : as + adj + as ; infériorité : not as… as / less… than.

Superlatif : the + court + -est (the tallest) ; the most + long ; in + lieu (in Guinea).

Irréguliers : good, better, the best ; bad, worse, the worst ; far, farther/further, the farthest/furthest.

Composé : a ten-year-old boy (sans -s) ; the + adj = groupe : the poor are…

  • Accorder l'adjectif : two big houses, pas two bigs houses.
  • Cumuler more et -er : bigger ou more beautiful, jamais more bigger.
  • Confondre -ed et -ing : I am bored (je m'ennuie) ≠ I am boring (je suis ennuyeux).
  • Mettre un -s dans l'adjectif composé : a ten-year-old girl, pas a ten-years-old girl.

*I live in Dalaba, a small and quiet town in the Fouta Djallon. The air is fresh and the hills are green. Dalaba is cooler than Conakry because it is high in the mountains. In the rainy season, the rivers are beautiful. The most interesting place for me is the old market, where friendly women sell sweet oranges. People are kind and welcoming. I am never bored in my town: it is the best place in the world for me!*
