Classroom objects

  • Employer a / an, les pluriels irréguliers et les noms indénombrables (a piece of chalk, a sheet of paper)
  • Situer les objets avec there is / there are et les prépositions de lieu
  • Utiliser les phrases de la vie de classe (Can I borrow…? Whose is this? How do you say… in English?)

Sékou commence fièrement : « The table of the teacher is in front the board. » Mariama continue : « There is two chalks on the desk. » Ibrahima lève la main : « Teacher, can you borrow me your rubber? »

3. A ou an ? Singulier ou pluriel ?

  • an devant un son voyelle : an exercise book, an eraser, an umbrella ; a devant un son consonne : a ruler, a uniform (le u se prononce « you »).
  • Pluriels réguliers : + -s : pens, rulers, desks.
  • + -es après -s, -sh, -ch, -x : a box → boxes, a bench → benches, a brush → brushes.
  • -y → -ies après consonne : a dictionary → dictionaries, a library → libraries.
  • -f → -ves : a shelf → shelves (étagères).
  • Toujours au pluriel : scissors (des ciseaux), compasses : a pair of scissors, two pairs of scissors.

chalk (la craie)a piece of chalk, two pieces of chalk
paper (le papier)a sheet of paper, three sheets of paper
gluea tube of glue
informationa piece of information
homework (les devoirs)an exercise ; I have a lot of homework. (jamais ~~homeworks~~)
furniture (les meubles)a piece of furniture
advice (des conseils)a piece of advice

On dit some chalk, a lot of paper, much homework, et *There is some chalk on the desk.*

Dénombrable
  • a pen, two pens
  • a ruler, rulers
  • There are three books.
  • How many pencils?
  • an exercise, exercises
Indénombrable
  • chalk : a piece of chalk
  • paper : a sheet of paper
  • There is some chalk.
  • How much homework?
  • homework (jamais homeworks)

5. There is / there are et les prépositions de lieu

  • *There is* + singulier ou indénombrable : There is a map on the wall. There is some chalk in the box.
  • *There are* + pluriel : There are forty desks in the classroom.
  • Question : Is there a clock? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. ; How many benches are there? — There are twenty.

Prépositions de lieu :

PrépositionSensExemple
onsur (en contact)The book is on the desk.
indansThe pens are in the pencil case.
undersousThe bag is under the bench.
above / overau-dessus deThe fan is above the desks.
next to / besideà côté deFanta sits next to Hawa.
betweenentre (deux)The board is between the windows.
behindderrièreThe bin is behind the door.
in front ofdevantThe teacher's desk is in front of the board.
oppositeen face deThe door is opposite the window.

Attention : on dit in front of (avec of), mais opposite et behind sans of.

6. À qui est-ce ? This, that, these, those

  • this (ceci, proche, singulier) / these (proches, pluriel) ; that (cela, éloigné) / those (éloignés, pluriel) : This ruler is mine. Those books are Fanta's.
  • *Whose pen is this? — It's Alpha's.* (le cas possessif 's) / *It's mine.* (pronom possessif : mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs)

7. Les phrases de la vie de classe

Demander un objet :

  • *Can I borrow your ruler, please?* (emprunter : c'est moi qui prends)
  • *Can you lend me your ruler, please?* (prêter : c'est l'autre qui donne)
  • Here you are. (Tiens / Voilà.) — Thank you.

Comprendre et participer :

  • How do you say « taille-crayon » in English? — What does "protractor" mean? — How do you spell it?
  • Can you repeat, please? — I don't understand. — May I go out, please?
  • Consignes du professeur : *Open your books at page 20. Close your exercise books. Listen carefully. Work in pairs. Copy the lesson. Underline the title in red. Clean the board, please.*

  1. Je commence par une vue d'ensemble : taille, nombre d'élèves (There are…).
  2. Je nomme le mobilier avec There is / There are, en accordant avec le nom.
  3. Je situe chaque élément avec une préposition de lieu (on, in, under, next to, in front of…).
  4. Je vérifie a / an, les pluriels (benches, shelves) et les indénombrables (some chalk, a sheet of paper).

Exemple

Correct the three sentences of the game.

« The table of the teacher is in front the board. » → possessif 's et in front OF : The teacher's desk is in front of the board.

« There is two chalks on the desk. » → chalk est indénombrable ; pluriel → there are : There are two pieces of chalk on the desk.

« Teacher, can you borrow me your rubber? » → l'autre donne → lend : Can you lend me your rubber, please? (ou Can I borrow your rubber, please?)

Exemple

Describe the picture: a desk with a book on it, a bag under the bench, a map between two windows.

There is a book on the desk. There is a schoolbag under the bench. There is a map on the wall, between the two windows.

Chaque phrase : There is + objet + préposition + lieu.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Mobilier : board, desk, bench, chair, cupboard, window, door, map, bin, ceiling fan.

Borrow = emprunter (Can I borrow…?) ; lend = prêter (Can you lend me…?). Whose is it? — It's Alpha's.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Dire « chalks », « papers », « homeworks » : on dit pieces of chalk, sheets of paper, homework.
