The human body

  • Dire où l'on a mal (I have a headache, My knee hurts, I've hurt my arm) et comprendre What's the matter?

L'infirmière demande : « What's the matter? Where does it hurt? »

Ousmane montre sa jambe et répond : « I have bad at the foot… no, at the leg… » Il ne connaît pas le mot « cheville ». L'infirmière sourit : « Your ankle? Did you hurt your ankle?

L'infirmière lui dit : « You should see a doctor. It might be malaria. »

En anglais, on emploie le déterminant possessif : my, your, his, her, our, their.

  • *He broke his leg.* (et non ~~the leg~~)
  • *Raise your hand, please.* ; *Wash your hands before eating.* ; *She is brushing her teeth.*

6. Parler de sa santé

Demander : What's the matter? / What's wrong? / How do you feel? / Where does it hurt?

Répondre, trois constructions :

ConstructionExempleSens
I have (got) a + partie + *-ache*I have a headache / a stomachache / a toothache / (an) earache / a backacheJ'ai mal à la tête, au ventre, aux dents…
I have a sore + partieI have a sore throat / sore eyesJ'ai mal à la gorge, aux yeux
partie + *hurts* / hurtMy knee hurts. My feet hurt.Mon genou me fait mal
I've hurt / broken / cut + my + partieI've hurt my ankle. She's cut her finger.

Conseiller : *should* + base verbale : You should see a doctor. You should rest. You shouldn't play football this week. On peut aussi dire : You'd better stay in bed. Take this medicine twice a day. Drink a lot of water.

Problème
  • I have a headache.
  • I've hurt my ankle.
  • I have a fever.
  • I have a toothache.
  • I have a cough.
Conseil
  • You should rest and drink water.
  • You shouldn't walk on it.
  • You should see a doctor.
  • You should go to the dentist.
  • You should drink something hot.

En anglais : *Malaria is transmitted by mosquito bites. To prevent it, sleep under a mosquito net and remove stagnant water around the house. If you have a fever, you should go to a health centre quickly.*

  1. Je réponds à la question What's the matter? en nommant la partie du corps précise.
  2. Je choisis la construction : a headache (-ache), a sore throat (sore), my knee hurts (hurt), I've hurt my ankle (accident).
  3. J'emploie le possessif my, his, her devant la partie du corps.
  4. J'ajoute depuis quand : for two days, since yesterday (present perfect si ça dure : I've had a fever for two days).
  5. Pour un conseil, j'utilise should / shouldn't + base verbale.

Exemple

Help Ousmane and Aïssatou talk to the nurse.

Ousmane : partie du corps = cheville (ankle) ; accident → I've hurt + possessif.

"I fell during a football match. I've hurt my ankle. It hurts when I walk."

Nurse: "You shouldn't play football this week. You should put ice on it and rest."

Aïssatou : mal à la tête → headache ; fièvre depuis deux jours → present perfect + for.

"I have a headache and I've had a fever for two days."

Nurse: "You should see a doctor. It might be malaria."

Exemple

Complete with the correct word: teeth, feet, hair, hurts, should.

a) We walk on our …… . → feet (pluriel irrégulier de foot).

b) Brush your …… twice a day. → teeth.

c) She has long black …… . → hair (indénombrable, sans -s).

d) My back …… . → hurts (3e personne du singulier).

e) You …… drink a lot of water. → should.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Sens : sight (eyes), hearing (ears), smell (nose), taste (tongue), touch (skin).

Possessif obligatoire : He broke his leg. Raise your hand.

What's the matter? — I have a headache / a sore throat / a fever. My knee hurts. I've hurt my ankle.

Conseil : You should / shouldn't + base verbale (You should see a doctor).

  • Utiliser the au lieu du possessif : He hurt his arm, pas He hurt the arm.
  • Traduire « j'ai mal à » par « I have bad at » : on dit I have a headache, My leg hurts, I have a sore throat.
  • Mettre to ou un -s après should : You should rest, pas You should to rest ni You shoulds rest.
  • Oublier le -s de hurts à la 3e personne : My head hurts ; mais au pluriel : My feet hurt.
