Leçon 6 sur 19
The future
Je sais choisir la bonne manière d'exprimer le futur en anglais (will, be going to, present progressive, present simple, future progressive, future perfect) selon ce que je veux dire.
- 55 min
- 6 exercices corrigés
- 1 schéma
- QCM de 5 questions
À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :
- Former et employer will et be going to
- Exprimer un futur immédiat avec be about to
- Respecter la règle du présent après when, if, as soon as
Sa mère regarde le ciel : « Look at those black clouds. It's going to rain. »
Son petit frère : « I'm hungry! » — Ousmane : « Wait, I'll make you a sandwich. »
Son père : « I'm travelling to Siguiri on Monday. The bus leaves at 7. »
Ousmane, rêveur : *« One day, I will be an engineer. By 2030, I will have finished my studies, and I will be working on big projects for Guinea. »*
2Je comprends
1. Will + base verbale
Forme : will (’ll) + base verbale, à toutes les personnes. Négation : *won't* (will not). Question : Will you come? (Shall I / Shall we…? s'utilise pour proposer : Shall I open the window?)
Emplois :
- prédiction, opinion sur l'avenir (souvent avec I think, I'm sure, probably, perhaps) : I think Guinea will win the match. It will probably be hot tomorrow.
- décision prise au moment où l'on parle : The phone is ringing. — I'll answer it!
- promesse, offre, refus : I'll help you with your homework. I won't tell anyone.
- fait futur certain : Tabaski will fall on a different date next year. I will be eighteen in March.
2. Be going to + base verbale
Forme : am / is / are going to + base verbale : She is going to study medicine.
Emplois :
- intention, projet déjà décidé avant de parler : I'm going to buy a new phone with my savings.
- prédiction fondée sur un indice présent : Look at those clouds! It's going to rain. — Be careful, you're going to fall!
Will ou going to ?
- « We haven't got any bread. » — « Oh, I'll buy some. » (décision immédiate)
- « Why are you taking your bag? » — « I'm going to buy some bread. » (décision prise avant)
3. Les présents à valeur de futur
- Present progressive : rendez-vous, projet organisé (on a déjà pris des dispositions : billet acheté, personne prévenue) : We are having a party on Saturday. I'm meeting the headmaster tomorrow.
- Present simple : horaires, programmes officiels : The plane to Abidjan takes off at 10:15. The holidays start next Friday.
- Present simple dans les subordonnées de temps et de condition (when, as soon as, before, after, until, if, unless) : *When you arrive in Labé, call me.* (et jamais ~~when you will arrive~~) ; *If it rains, we will stay at home.*
4. Le future progressive
Forme : will be + V-ing.
Emplois :
- action en cours à un moment précis du futur : This time tomorrow, I will be sitting my maths exam.
I'll be passing the market, so I can buy your tomatoes.
5. Le future perfect
Forme : will have + participe passé.
By the end of the year, the workers will have finished the bridge. By 2030, I will have graduated.
Le future perfect progressive (will have been + V-ing) exprime la durée jusqu'à un moment futur : In June, I will have been learning English for seven years.
6. Les autres expressions du futur
- be about to + base : futur immédiat (être sur le point de) : Hurry up, the bus is about to leave!
- be to + base : projet officiel, programme décidé par une autorité : The minister is to visit Boké next week.
- *be likely to / be bound to* : probabilité, certitude : Prices are likely to rise.
- will + base
- be going to + base
- present progressive
- present simple
- will be + V-ing
- will have + participe passé
- be about to + base
- Prédiction, décision immédiate, promesse
- Intention déjà décidée, prédiction avec indice
- Rendez-vous, projet organisé
- Horaire officiel ; après when, if, as soon as
- Action en cours à un moment futur
- Action accomplie avant un moment futur
- Futur immédiat
Méthode
Pour choisir la forme du futur :
- Suis-je dans une subordonnée après when, if, as soon as, until, before ?
- Action en cours à un moment futur ? will be + V-ing. Accomplie avant un moment futur (by…) ? will have + participe passé.
Exemple
Choose the best form and justify.
a) « Oh no, I've forgotten my pen! » — « Don't worry, I (lend) you mine. »
Décision prise au moment où l'on parle, offre → I'll lend you mine.
b) « Look at that man on the roof! He (fall)! »
Prédiction fondée sur un indice présent → He's going to fall!
c) « The ferry to the Îles de Loos (leave) at 9 tomorrow. »
Horaire officiel → leaves.
d) « I'll phone you as soon as I (get) the results. »
Subordonnée de temps → as soon as I get the results.
Exemple
Complete with the future progressive or the future perfect.
« Next Saturday at 10 a.m., Hawa (dance) at her sister's wedding. By then, she (practise) the dance for a month. By the evening, the guests (eat) all the food! »
Action en cours à un moment précis du futur → will be dancing.
Durée jusqu'à un moment futur → will have been practising (ou will have practised).
Action accomplie avant un moment futur (by the evening) → will have eaten.
3Je retiens
Je retiens
Will + base : prédiction, opinion, décision immédiate, promesse, offre. Négation : won't.
Be going to + base : intention déjà décidée ; prédiction fondée sur un indice présent.
Present progressive : projet organisé, rendez-vous. Present simple : horaire officiel.
Après when, if, as soon as, until, before, after (sens futur) : present simple, jamais will.
Will be + V-ing : action en cours à un moment futur (this time tomorrow).
Will have + participe passé : action accomplie avant un moment futur (by…).
Be about to + base : futur immédiat. Be to + base : programme officiel.
4Erreurs fréquentes
- Mettre will après when ou if : « When I finish, I will call you », pas « When I will finish ».
- Oublier be dans going to : « I am going to travel », pas « I going to travel ».
- Mettre to après will : « She will come », pas « She will to come ».
- Employer will pour un projet déjà organisé : « I'm seeing the doctor at 3 » est plus naturel que « I will see the doctor at 3 ».

In three years, I will be working on a farm project, and by 2031 I will have finished my studies. I hope I will help farmers in my region to grow more food.*
