Leçon 15 sur 19
Tag questions
Je maîtrise les cas particuliers des tag questions (I am, let's, impératif, mots négatifs, there is, nobody, everything…), leur intonation et les reply questions.
- 50 min
- 6 exercices corrigés
- 1 schéma
- QCM de 5 questions
À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :
- Former les tags des cas particuliers (aren't I, shall we, will you, there is…)
- Reconnaître les phrases de sens négatif (never, nobody, hardly…)
- Reprendre les sujets indéfinis (everybody → they, nothing → it)
Fatoumata : « Let's go on Saturday, shall we? »
Ousmane : « Good idea. I'm invited too, aren't I? »
Fatoumata : « Of course! Nobody has told the others yet, have they? »
Ousmane : « No. Bring some water, will you? There isn't any shop near the river, is there? »
Mais ici : Let's… shall we?, I'm… aren't I?, Nobody… have they?, Bring… will you?, There isn't… is there?
2Je comprends
1. Rappel de la règle générale
Phrase affirmative → tag négatif ; phrase négative → tag affirmatif. On reprend l'auxiliaire (ou do / does / did) et le sujet par un pronom : You live in Kankan, don't you? He can't swim, can he?
2. Les cas particuliers à connaître
| Phrase | Tag | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| *I am* | *aren't I?* | I'm late, aren't I? (on ne dit pas ~~amn't I~~) |
| *I'm not* | am I? | I'm not wrong, am I? |
| *Let's* (proposition) | *shall we?* | Let's start, shall we? |
| Impératif (demande) | *will you? / won't you? / can you? / could you?* | Close the door, will you? Sit down, won't you? (invitation polie) |
| Impératif négatif | *will you?* | Don't be late, will you? |
| *There is / there are* | *isn't there? / aren't there?* | There is a pharmacy here, isn't there? |
| *This / that* | *it* | That was a good match, wasn't it? |
| *These / those* | *they* | Those are your cousins, aren't they? |
| *Used to* | *didn't* | You used to live in Boké, didn't you? |
| *Ought to* | *shouldn't* | We ought to leave, shouldn't we? |
| *Had better* | *hadn't* | You'd better go, hadn't you? |
| *Must* (obligation) | *mustn't* | We must hurry, mustn't we? |
3. Les phrases de sens négatif
Certains mots rendent une phrase négative par le sens, même sans not : *never, no, nobody, no one, nothing, nowhere, hardly, scarcely, seldom, rarely, little, few*.
- *He never comes on time, does he?*
- *There is nothing to eat, is there?*
- *She hardly ever studies, does she?*
- *Few people came, did they?*
4. Les sujets indéfinis
| Sujet | Pronom du tag | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| *everybody, everyone, somebody, someone, nobody, no one* | *they* | *Everybody was happy, weren't they? Nobody called, did they?* |
| *everything, something, nothing* | *it* | *Everything is ready, isn't it? Nothing happened, did it?* |
5. Les phrases complexes
Quand la phrase contient *I think, I believe, I suppose* + une proposition, le tag porte sur la proposition principale de sens, pas sur I think : *I think she is right, isn't she?* Mais ailleurs, le tag porte sur la proposition principale : *You said that he was ill, didn't you?*
Si I think est à la forme négative (I don't think), la phrase est de sens négatif : *I don't think he'll come, will he?*
6. L'intonation : confirmation ou vraie question ?
Le même tag n'a pas le même sens selon la voix.
- On est presque sûr de la réponse.
- On demande juste une confirmation.
- You're from Labé, aren't you? (↘)
- = Tu es de Labé, je crois bien.
- On n'est pas sûr : vraie question.
- On attend vraiment une information.
- You're from Labé, aren't you? (↗)
- = Tu es de Labé, c'est bien ça ?
7. Les same-way tags et les reply questions
- Same-way tag (tag de même forme) : phrase affirmative + tag affirmatif, pour exprimer la surprise, l'intérêt ou parfois l'ironie : So you've passed your BAC, have you? That's great! ; You're the new teacher, are you?
*« I've just come back from Nzérékoré. » — « Have you? How was it? »*
*« Kadiatou doesn't eat meat. » — « Doesn't she? I didn't know that. »*
Méthode
Pour former une tag question difficile :
- Je cherche un cas particulier : I am, let's, impératif, there is, used to, had better.
- Je choisis le pronom : everybody / nobody → they ; everything / nothing → it ; this / that → it.
Exemple
Add tag questions to these special cases.
a) « I'm the first, … » → aren't I? (I am → aren't I)
b) « Let's visit Grandma on Sunday, … » → shall we? (let's → shall we)
c) « Pass me the salt, … » → will you? (ou could you?) (impératif)
d) « Nobody saw the thief, … » → did they? (nobody : négatif, sujet → they)
e) « There are many students in your class, … » → aren't there? (there are)
f) « She hardly speaks, … » → does she? (hardly : sens négatif)
Exemple
React with a reply question.
« I've found a job in Boké. » → Have you? Congratulations!
« Alpha can't swim. » → Can't he? I thought he could.
« We met a famous singer at the airport. » → Did you? That's amazing!
3Je retiens
Je retiens
I am → aren't I? ; Let's → shall we? ; impératif → will you? / won't you? / could you? ; Don't… → will you?
There is / are → isn't there? / aren't there? ; used to → didn't ; had better → hadn't ; ought to → shouldn't.
Mots négatifs (never, nobody, nothing, hardly, seldom, few) → tag affirmatif.
Everybody, somebody, nobody → they ; everything, something, nothing → it ; this / that → it.
I think + proposition : le tag porte sur la proposition (I think it's true, isn't it?).
Intonation descendante = demande de confirmation ; montante = vraie question.
Reply question (Have you? Did she?) = réaction d'intérêt ou de surprise.
4Erreurs fréquentes
- Dire « amn't I? » ou « am not I? » : on dit « I'm right, aren't I? ».
- Mettre un tag négatif après never ou nobody : « He never lies, does he? », pas « doesn't he? ».
- Reprendre everybody par he : « Everybody came, didn't they? ».
- Former le tag sur I think : « I think it's late, isn't it? », pas « don't I? ».
