Expressing regret and pity

Je sais exprimer en anglais le regret (sur le présent et sur le passé) avec I wish, if only, should have et regret, et exprimer la compassion ou la pitié envers quelqu'un avec les formules adaptées.

  • 50 min
  • 6 exercices corrigés
  • 1 schéma
  • QCM de 5 questions

À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :

  • Exprimer un regret sur le présent avec I wish / if only + prétérit
  • Exprimer un regret sur le passé avec I wish / if only + past perfect et should have + participe passé
  • Utiliser regret + V-ing et regret to
  • Exprimer la pitié et la compassion (What a pity!, I'm sorry to hear that…)

*« I wish I had revised more. I should have listened to the teacher. If only I hadn't spent so much time watching football! »*

Lansana le console : « What a pity! I'm sorry for you. But don't worry, you can do better next term. »

Elle lui dit : « Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. That's terrible. Is everybody all right? »

2Je comprends

1. Le regret sur le présent : I wish / If only + prétérit

Pour regretter une situation présente (on voudrait qu'elle soit différente maintenant), on emploie I wish ou If only + prétérit (past simple ou past progressive).

  • I don't have a bicycle. → *I wish I had a bicycle.* (je regrette de ne pas avoir de vélo)
  • I can't speak Chinese. → *I wish I could speak Chinese.*
  • It's raining. → *If only it wasn't / weren't raining!*
  • I live far from school. → *I wish I lived closer to school.*

Avec be, on peut employer *were* à toutes les personnes, surtout à l'écrit : *I wish I were taller. If only he were here!*

*If only* est plus fort, plus émotionnel que I wish.

2. Le regret sur le passé : I wish / If only + past perfect

If only + past perfect (had + participe passé).

  • I didn't revise. → *I wish I had revised.* (je regrette de ne pas avoir révisé)
  • I shouted at my brother. → *I wish I hadn't shouted at my brother.*
  • We missed the bus. → *If only we had left earlier!*

3. Should have / shouldn't have + participe passé

  • *I should have listened to my parents.* (j'aurais dû écouter)
  • *You shouldn't have spent all your money.* (tu n'aurais pas dû dépenser)

Avec you ou he, cela devient un reproche.

4. Le verbe regret

  • regret + V-ing (ou having + participe passé) : regretter d'avoir fait quelque chose : *I regret leaving school so early. She regrets not having learnt to drive.*
  • regret that + proposition : I regret that I didn't accept the job.
  • regret to + base (say, tell, inform) : formule formelle pour annoncer une mauvaise nouvelle : *We regret to inform you that your application has not been accepted.*

Autres expressions : It's a shame I… / I feel bad about… / I'm sorry I… / What a mistake!

Réalité
  • I don't have a phone. (présent)
  • I can't swim. (présent)
  • I didn't go to the wedding. (passé)
  • I lost my money. (passé)
  • I didn't listen. (passé)
Regret
  • I wish I had a phone.
  • If only I could swim!
  • I wish I had gone to the wedding.
  • If only I hadn't lost my money!
  • I should have listened.
Regret sur le présent : wish + prétérit. Regret sur le passé : wish + past perfect.

5. I wish + would : souhaiter un changement chez quelqu'un

I wish + sujet + would + base exprime l'agacement ou le souhait que quelqu'un d'autre change son comportement : *I wish my brother would stop borrowing my phone. I wish it would stop raining!* (On ne dit pas ~~I wish I would~~.)

6. Exprimer la pitié et la compassion

SituationFormules
Petite déceptionWhat a pity! / What a shame! / That's a pity. / Too bad! / Oh dear!
Mauvaise nouvelleI'm sorry to hear that. / I'm so sorry. / That's terrible! / How awful! / Poor you!
Compassion profonde (deuil, malheur)*I'm deeply sorry. / I feel for you. / Please accept my deepest sympathy. / My thoughts are with you and your family.*
Pitié pour quelqu'unI feel sorry for him. / Poor Alpha! / I pity them.

Grammaire :

  • What a pity / What a shame (that)… : What a pity (that) you can't come!
  • It's a pity + to / *that* : It's a pity to waste so much food.
  • feel sorry for + personne : avoir pitié de : I feel sorry for the flood victims.
  • *I'm sorry to hear (that)…* : I'm sorry to hear that your father is ill.

Cheer up! / Never mind. / It's not your fault. / Things will get better. / You'll do better next time. / Is there anything I can do to help?*

Méthode

Pour exprimer un regret :

  2. Présent → I wish / If only + prétérit (were pour be, could pour can).
  3. Passé → I wish / If only + had + participe passé, ou should (n't) have + participe passé.

  1. Je choisis la formule selon la gravité : What a pity (petite déception), I'm sorry to hear that (mauvaise nouvelle), Please accept my deepest sympathy (deuil).

Exemple

Express regret with I wish.

a) « I'm not tall enough to play basketball. » (présent)

→ I wish I were (was) taller.

b) « I can't afford a new pair of shoes. » (présent)

→ I wish I could afford a new pair of shoes.

c) « I forgot my grandmother's birthday. » (passé)

→ I wish I hadn't forgotten my grandmother's birthday.

d) « Mamadou didn't take an umbrella and got wet. » (passé)

→ Mamadou wishes he had taken an umbrella. / He should have taken an umbrella.

Exemple

React with the appropriate expression of pity or sympathy.

« I can't come to your party, I have to work. » → What a pity! Maybe next time.

« My uncle's shop burnt down last night. » → Oh no, that's terrible! I'm so sorry to hear that. Was anybody hurt?

« I failed my driving test. » → Oh, bad luck! Never mind, you'll pass next time.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Regret sur le présent : I wish / If only + prétérit (I wish I had a bike ; I wish I were / could…).

Regret sur le passé : I wish / If only + had + participe passé (I wish I had revised).

Should have / shouldn't have + participe passé : j'aurais dû / je n'aurais pas dû.

Regret + V-ing : regretter d'avoir fait ; regret to inform / tell : annoncer une mauvaise nouvelle (formel).

I wish + someone + would : souhait que l'autre change (I wish you would listen!).

Pitié et compassion : What a pity! What a shame! I'm sorry to hear that. Poor you! I feel sorry for… Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Consoler : Never mind, Cheer up, Things will get better, Is there anything I can do?

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Mettre le présent après wish : « I wish I had more time », pas « I wish I have more time ».
  • Utiliser le prétérit pour un regret passé : « I wish I had studied », pas « I wish I studied » quand on parle du passé.
  • Oublier have après should : « I should have come », pas « I should came ».
  • Confondre regret + V-ing et regret to : « I regret telling him » (je regrette de le lui avoir dit) ≠ « I regret to tell you » (j'ai le regret de vous dire).
