  • 45 min
  • 6 exercices corrigés
  • 1 schéma
  • QCM de 5 questions

À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :

  • Choisir entre there is (singulier) et there are (pluriel)
  • Demander une quantité avec How many… are there?

*« In my village, il y a a school, a health centre and a big market. Il y a also many mango trees. Il n'y a pas de hospital. »*

En anglais, on utilise une expression toute faite : *there is* ou *there are*.

Mais Kadiatou se demande : pourquoi deux formes ? Et comment dire « il n'y a pas » ou demander « y a-t-il… ? » et « combien y a-t-il… ? »

2Je comprends

1. Le sens de there is / there are

  • *There is a well in the yard.* (Il y a un puits dans la cour.)
  • *There are three pupils in the office.* (Il y a trois élèves dans le bureau.)

  • nom singulier (ou nom qu'on ne compte pas) → there is ;
  • nom pluriel → there are.
There is (singulier)
  • There is a table.
  • There is an orange.
  • There is a teacher.
  • There is some water.
There are (pluriel)
  • There are two tables.
  • There are some oranges.
  • There are many pupils.
  • There are five goats.
On regarde le nom qui suit pour choisir is ou are.

À l'oral et dans une lettre amicale, there is se contracte en *there's* : There's a cat under the bed. On ne contracte pas there are.

3. La forme négative

On ajoute not après is ou are :

  • *There isn't a hospital in my village.* (Il n'y a pas d'hôpital.)
  • *There aren't any cinemas in our town.* (Il n'y a pas de cinémas.)

Au pluriel négatif, on met souvent any devant le nom : *There aren't any books on the shelf.*

On peut aussi dire *There is no hospital* / *There are no cinemas* : le sens est le même.

4. La forme interrogative et les réponses courtes

Pour poser la question, on inverse : is ou are passe devant there.

QuestionRéponse ouiRéponse non
*Is there a library in your school?*Yes, there is.No, there isn't.
*Are there any mango trees in your garden?*Yes, there are.No, there aren't.

Dans la question au pluriel, on met souvent any : Are there any…?

Attention : dans la réponse courte affirmative, on ne contracte pas : Yes, there is. (et non ~~Yes, there's.~~)

5. Demander combien : How many…?

Pour demander une quantité, on utilise How many + nom pluriel + are there ?

  • *How many pupils are there in your class?* – *There are fifty-two pupils.*
  • *How many rooms are there in your house?* – *There are four rooms.*

Si la réponse est « un seul », on revient au singulier : *How many wells are there in the village? – There is one well.*

6. Le tableau complet

FormeSingulierPluriel
AffirmativeThere is a book. There are two books.
NégativeThere isn't a book.There aren't any books.
InterrogativeIs there a book? Are there any books?
Réponses courtesYes, there is. / No, there isn't.Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
QuantitéHow many books are there?

7. There is / there are et les lieux

  • *in* (dans) : *There are twenty desks in the classroom.*
  • *on* (sur) : *There is a map on the wall.*
  • *under* (sous) : *There is a bag under the table.*
  • *near* (près de) : *There is a well near the school.*

  2. Singulier → there is + a / an + nom ; pluriel → there are + nombre ou some ou many + nom au pluriel.
  3. Pour la négation, j'ajoute not : there isn't / there aren't (any).
  4. Pour la question, je mets is ou are devant there : Is there…? Are there any…?
  5. Pour demander une quantité : How many + nom pluriel + are there?

Exemple

Complete with there is or there are.

a) ... a blackboard in our classroom.

blackboard est singulier → There is a blackboard in our classroom.

b) ... forty-five pupils in my class.

pupils est pluriel → There are forty-five pupils in my class.

c) ... an old mango tree near the gate.

tree est singulier → There is an old mango tree near the gate.

Exemple

Transform the sentences.

« There are some goats in the field. » (négative, puis question)

Negative: There aren't any goats in the field.

Question: Are there any goats in the field? – No, there aren't.

« There is a market in the village. » (question avec réponse courte)

Question: Is there a market in the village? – Yes, there is.

Ask a question about the words in bold: « There are six rooms in the house. »

On demande une quantité → How many rooms are there in the house?

8. Décrire un lieu

Voici la lettre de Kadiatou, maintenant correcte :

Dear Mary,

*I live in a village near Dabola. In my village, there is a school, there is a health centre and there is a big market. There are many mango trees. There isn't a hospital, but there is a pharmacy. How many pupils are there in your class? In my class, there are forty pupils.*

Your friend, Kadiatou.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

There is + nom singulier = il y a (un seul) : There is a well.

There are + nom pluriel = il y a (plusieurs) : There are three wells.

Négation : there isn't (a…) / there aren't (any…) ; ou there is no / there are no.

Question : Is there a…? Are there any…? Réponses : Yes, there is / No, there isn't ; Yes, there are / No, there aren't.

Quantité : How many + nom pluriel + are there?

Forme courte : there's (seulement pour there is, et pas dans la réponse courte).

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Traduire mot à mot « il y a » : « It has a school » ou « He is a market » sont faux ; on écrit « There is a school », « There is a market ».
  • Mauvais accord : « There is three pupils » est faux ; on écrit « There are three pupils ».
  • Oublier l'inversion dans la question : « There is a bank? » est incorrect à l'écrit ; on écrit « Is there a bank? ».
  • Mettre un nom singulier après How many : « How many pupil are there? » est faux ; on écrit « How many pupils are there? ».
