S'exprimer dans le temps

Je sais situer une action dans le temps en anglais avec les bonnes prépositions (in, on, at, for, since, ago, during, until, by) et les marqueurs du passé, du présent et du futur.

  • 50 min
  • 6 exercices corrigés
  • 2 schémas
  • QCM de 5 questions

À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :

  • Choisir entre in, on et at devant une expression de temps
  • Distinguer for, since et ago, et les employer avec le bon temps
  • Employer during, while, until, by, before, after, from… to
  • Enchaîner les étapes d'un récit (first, then, after that, finally) et associer chaque marqueur au bon temps verbal

*« I live in Kankan since 2015. I started the lycée there is two years. In the morning, I study in 6 o'clock until 7. During I study, my sister prepares breakfast. I will finish my homework until Friday. »*

Son correspondant répond gentiment : « I understand you, but some sentences are strange. »

Lansana relit. Chaque phrase contient une expression de temps : since 2015, there is two years, at 6 o'clock, until Friday…

2Je comprends

1. In, on, at : le rappel indispensable

EmploiExemples
atheure, moment précisat 6 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at night, at the moment, at the weekend (GB)
onjour, dateon Monday, on the 2nd of October, on my birthday, on Friday morning
inpartie de la journée, mois, saison, année, siècle, durée futurein the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in May, in the dry season, in 2026, in the 20th century

Remarque : in the morning (le matin, en général) mais on Monday morning (dès qu'un jour est précisé, on passe à on), et at night (la nuit).

Aucune préposition devant last, next, this, every, yesterday, today, tomorrow : I saw him yesterday. We'll travel next week.

2. For, since et ago

forpendant, depuis (une durée)une durée : for two years, for three hourspresent perfect ou prétérit
sincedepuis (un point de départ)une date, un moment : since 2015, since Monday, since I was tenpresent perfect
agoil y a (dans le passé)placé après la durée : two years agoprétérit
  • *I have lived in Kankan since 2015.* (depuis 2015, et j'y habite encore)
  • *I have lived in Kankan for eleven years.* (depuis onze ans, point de vue en 2026)
  • *I started the lycée two months ago.* (il y a deux mois, action terminée)

Pour dire « depuis » (action qui dure encore), l'anglais n'utilise pas le présent comme le français, mais le present perfect (have / has + participe passé). I live in Kankan since 2015 est donc faux.

20152016201720182019202020212022202320242025202620152026
I have lived in Kankan since 2015 (point de départ) = for eleven years (durée jusqu'à 2026).

Pour poser la question : How long have you lived here? — For eleven years. / Since 2015. ; When did you arrive? — Eleven years ago.

3. During et while : « pendant »

  • during + nom : during the holidays, during the rainy season, during the lesson.
  • while + sujet et verbe : while I was studying, while my sister prepares breakfast.
  • for + durée chiffrée : for two hours (et non ~~during two hours~~, sauf si l'on insiste sur un moment à l'intérieur de la période).

During the harmattan, the air is dry. While I study, my sister prepares breakfast.

I study from 6 until 7. The shop is open until 8 p.m.
I will finish my homework by Friday. (d'ici vendredi, avant vendredi)

Lansana voulait dire « d'ici vendredi » : il faut by Friday.

5. Before, after, from… to

  • before (avant) / after (après) : before lunch, after school, after the exam. Ils peuvent aussi introduire une proposition : Wash your hands before you eat.
  • from… to / until (de… à) : from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., from May to October.
  • between… and (entre… et) : between 7 and 8 o'clock.

MarqueursTempsExemple
every day, usually, often, on Mondayspresent simpleI usually walk to school.
now, at the moment, today, Look!present continuousI am writing an e-mail now.
yesterday, last week, in 2015, two days agoprétéritI visited Boké last week.
since, for, already, just, yet, ever, neverpresent perfectI have already finished.
tomorrow, next week, in two days, soonfutur (will, be going to)I will travel next week.

Attention : in two days (dans deux jours, futur) s'oppose à two days ago (il y a deux jours, passé).

Passé
  • yesterday
  • last week
  • two days ago
  • the day before yesterday
  • in 2015 (date passée)
Futur
  • tomorrow
  • next week
  • in two days
  • the day after tomorrow
  • by Friday (échéance)

First, … Then, … After that, … Next, … Later, … Finally / In the end, …

  2. Je choisis le mot : at / on / in ; for (durée) ; since (point de départ) ; ago (il y a) ; until (jusqu'à) ; by (au plus tard).
  3. Je choisis during + nom ou while + sujet + verbe.
  4. J'accorde le temps du verbe au marqueur : since/for (action qui dure encore) → present perfect ; ago, last, yesterday → prétérit ; next, tomorrow, in + durée → futur.
  5. Je relis en vérifiant qu'aucune préposition n'est placée devant last, next, this, every.

Exemple

Correct Lansana's e-mail.

« I live in Kankan since 2015. » → since + action qui dure encore → present perfect : I have lived in Kankan since 2015.

« I started the lycée there is two years. » → « il y a » = ago, après la durée : I started the lycée two years ago.

« I study in 6 o'clock until 7. » → heure → at, et « de… à » : I study from 6 until 7 (ou at 6 o'clock until 7).

« During I study, my sister prepares breakfast. » → sujet + verbe → while : While I study, my sister prepares breakfast.

« I will finish my homework until Friday. » → échéance → by : I will finish my homework by Friday.

Exemple

Complete with for, since or ago.

a) Fanta has studied English …… 2020. → since (point de départ : une date).

b) We have waited for the bus …… forty minutes. → for (durée).

c) Alpha left for Conakry three days …… . → ago (il y a, prétérit).

d) How long have you known Kadiatou? — …… we were children. → since (point de départ : une proposition).

3Je retiens

Je retiens

at + heure, moment (at 7, at night) ; on + jour, date (on Monday, on 2nd October) ; in + partie du jour, mois, année (in the morning, in June, in 1958).

Pas de préposition devant last, next, this, every, yesterday, tomorrow.

for + durée (for three years) ; since + point de départ (since 2015) → present perfect si l'action dure encore.

durée + ago = il y a (two years ago) → prétérit.

during + nom ; while + sujet + verbe ; until = jusqu'à ; by = au plus tard, d'ici.

in two days (futur) ≠ two days ago (passé).

Récit : First, Then, After that, Finally.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Utiliser le présent avec since ou for : I have lived here since 2015, pas I live here since 2015.
  • Traduire « il y a » par there is : on dit two years ago, avec ago après la durée.
  • Mettre un sujet et un verbe après during : during the lesson, mais while I was studying.
  • Confondre until et by : until = l'action continue jusqu'à ; by = l'action est finie au plus tard à ce moment.
  • Confondre since et for : since 2020 (date), for six years (durée).
