Fanta commence : « monday, tuesday… ». The two October ? »
2Je comprends
1. Les jours de la semaine (the days of the week)
|---|---|---|
| *Monday* | lundi | Mon. |
| *Tuesday* | mardi | Tue. |
| *Wednesday* | mercredi | Wed. |
| *Thursday* | jeudi | Thu. |
| *Friday* | vendredi | Fri. |
| *Saturday* | samedi | Sat. |
| *Sunday* | dimanche | Sun. |
Questions utiles :
- What day is it today? – It's Friday. (Quel jour sommes-nous ?)
- What day is it tomorrow? – It's Saturday.
Autres mots : today (aujourd'hui), tomorrow (demain), yesterday (hier).
2. Les mois de l'année (the months of the year)
|---|---|---|---|
| *January* | janvier | *July* | juillet |
| *February* | février | *August* | août |
| *March* | mars | *September* | septembre |
| *April* | avril | *October* | octobre |
| *May* | mai | *November* | novembre |
| *June* | juin | *December* | décembre |
Question utile : What month is it? – It's October.
| Nombre | Ordinal | Écrit | Nombre | Ordinal | Écrit | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | first | 1st | 11 | eleventh | 11th | |
| 2 | second | 2nd | 12 | twelfth | 12th | |
| 3 | third | 3rd | 20 | twentieth | 20th | |
| 4 | fourth | 4th | 21 | twenty-first | 21st | |
| 5 | fifth | 5th | 22 | twenty-second | 22nd | |
| 8 | eighth | 8th | 23 | twenty-third | 23rd | |
| 9 | ninth | 9th | 30 | thirtieth | 30th |
Règle : on ajoute -th au nombre (sixth, seventh, tenth), sauf pour 1, 2 et 3 (et 21, 22, 23, 31) : *first, second, third*. Attention aux formes fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth.
4. Dire et écrire une date
En anglais britannique :
- on écrit : 2nd October ou 2 October ;
- on dit : *the second of October*.
Exemple : *Guinea became independent on the second of October, nineteen fifty-eight.* (La Guinée est devenue indépendante le 2 octobre 1958.)
Pour demander la date : What's the date today? – It's the fifth of March.
Pour l'anniversaire : When is your birthday? – It's on the twelfth of June.
5. Les prépositions de temps : on, in, at
| Préposition | Devant… | Exemples |
|---|---|---|
| on | un jour, une date | on Monday, on Sundays, on the second of October |
| in | un mois, une saison, une année | in May, in the rainy season, in 1958 |
| at | une heure, le week-end (anglais britannique) | at 8 o'clock, at the weekend |
On ne met pas de préposition devant today, tomorrow, yesterday, next week, last month : *I have an English lesson tomorrow.*
6. Les saisons (the seasons)
- about November to April
- It is hot and dry.
- the Harmattan blows
- dust, clear sky
- about May or June to October
- It rains a lot.
- the rivers are full
- clouds, storms
- *winter* : l'hiver
Les saisons s'écrivent sans majuscule : in winter, in the dry season.
- It is hot. (Il fait chaud.) – It is cold. (Il fait froid.)
- It is sunny. (Il y a du soleil.) – It is windy. (Il y a du vent.)
- It is raining. (Il pleut.) – It is dusty.
- J'écris 2nd October et je dis « the second of October ».
- Je choisis la préposition : on + jour ou date ; in + mois, saison, année ; at + heure.
- Pas de préposition devant today, tomorrow, yesterday.
Exemple
Write and say these dates.
le 1er janvier → written: 1st January → said: the first of January.
le 3 mars → written: 3rd March → said: the third of March.
le 22 juillet → written: 22nd July → said: the twenty-second of July.
le 2 octobre 1958 → written: 2nd October 1958 → said: the second of October, nineteen fifty-eight.
Exemple
Complete with on, in or at.
a) My birthday is ... June. → mois : in June.
b) We go to the market ... Saturdays. → jour : on Saturdays.
c) The lesson starts ... 8 o'clock. → heure : at 8 o'clock.
d) It rains a lot ... the rainy season. → saison : in the rainy season.
e) Guinea's Independence Day is ... the second of October. → date : on the second of October.
3Je retiens
Je retiens
Jours : Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (toujours avec une majuscule).
Mois : January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December (majuscule).
Ordinaux : first, second, third, fourth, fifth… twelfth, twentieth, twenty-first. On écrit 2nd October, on dit « the second of October ».
on + jour ou date ; in + mois, saison, année ; at + heure.
- Utiliser le nombre ordinaire dans la date : « the two of October » est faux ; on dit « the second of October ».
- Se tromper de préposition : « in Monday » ou « on May » sont faux ; on écrit « on Monday », « in May ».
