« Hello! My name is Aïssatou. I am thirteen. I am from Kindia. My father is a driver and my mother is a teacher. »
I is Sékou. I have fourteen years.
2Je comprends
1. To be au présent : la forme affirmative
Au présent, to be a trois formes : am, is et are.
|---|---|---|---|
| I | I am | I'm | je suis |
| you | you are | you're | tu es / vous êtes |
| he | he is | he's | il est |
| she | she is | she's | elle est |
| it | it is | it's | il / elle est (chose, animal) |
| we | we are | we're | nous sommes |
| you | you are | you're | vous êtes |
| they | they are | they're | ils / elles sont |
Retiens la règle simple : am va seulement avec I ; is va avec he, she, it et tout nom au singulier ; are va avec you, we, they et tout nom au pluriel.
- *My sister is a nurse.* (un nom singulier = she)
- *The mangoes are ripe.* (un nom pluriel = they)
- *Conakry is the capital of Guinea.*
La forme contractée (I'm, she's, they're) s'utilise surtout à l'oral et dans les lettres amicales. L'apostrophe remplace la lettre qui disparaît : I am → I'm.
|---|---|
| I am not | I'm not |
| he / she / it is not | he / she / it isn't |
| we / you / they are not | we / you / they aren't |
Attention : on ne dit pas ~~I amn't~~. On dit I'm not.
- You are tired. → *Are you tired?*
- She is from Labé. → *Is she from Labé?*
- Are you tired? — *Yes, I am.* / *No, I'm not.*
- Is she from Labé? — *Yes, she is.* / *No, she isn't.*
Dans une réponse courte positive, on n'utilise jamais la forme contractée : on dit Yes, I am, pas ~~Yes, I'm~~.
- 1Phrase affirmative : sujet + am / is / are (She is a student.)
- 2Phrase négative : sujet + am / is / are + not (She isn't a student.)
- 3Question : Am / Is / Are + sujet ? (Is she a student?)
- 4Réponse courte : Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.
3. Les emplois de to be
Le verbe to be sert à :
- dire qui l'on est, son nom, son métier : I am Mamadou. He is a farmer. (devant un métier au singulier, on met a ou an : *She is an engineer.*)
- dire d'où l'on vient, sa nationalité : We are from Guinea. We are Guinean.
- dire l'âge : I am thirteen (years old).
- décrire un état, une qualité : The river is wide. I am hungry. They are happy.
- dire où se trouve quelque chose : The book is on the table. My parents are at the market.
- parler de la météo et de l'heure : It is hot today. It is seven o'clock.
Plusieurs expressions françaises avec « avoir » se traduisent par to be :
| Français | Anglais |
|---|---|
| avoir faim | to be hungry |
| avoir soif | to be thirsty |
| avoir froid / chaud | to be cold / hot |
| avoir peur | to be afraid |
| avoir raison / tort | to be right / wrong |
| avoir 13 ans | to be 13 |
4. There is / there are : « il y a »
Pour dire il y a, l'anglais utilise there + to be :
- there is (there's) + nom singulier : There is a well in the village.
- there are + nom pluriel : There are four natural regions in Guinea.
Négation : There isn't a hospital here. There aren't any shops.
Question : Is there a school in your village? — Yes, there is.
5. To be au passé : was et were
Au passé (le prétérit), to be n'a que deux formes :
- was avec I, he, she, it ;
- were avec you, we, they.
I was at home yesterday. They were at the stadium.
Négation : wasn't, weren't. Question : Were you at school yesterday? — Yes, I was.
Méthode
Pour conjuguer to be sans erreur :
- Je repère le sujet : est-ce I, un singulier (he, she, it, un nom) ou un pluriel (you, we, they, des noms) ?
- Je repère le temps : présent (now, today) ou passé (yesterday, last week, in 2020) ?
- Présent : I → am ; singulier → is ; pluriel et you → are. Passé : I et singulier → was ; pluriel et you → were.
Exemple
Complete with am, is or are.
a) Fatoumata ... in class 9. → Fatoumata = she → Fatoumata is in class 9.
b) My brothers ... at the mosque. → brothers = they → My brothers are at the mosque.
c) I ... very thirsty. → I → I am very thirsty. (avoir soif = to be thirsty)
d) The Fouta-Djallon ... a mountainous region. → un nom singulier → is.
Exemple
Transform: "Alpha is thirteen."
Negative: Alpha isn't thirteen. (ou Alpha is not thirteen.)
Question: Is Alpha thirteen?
Short answers: Yes, he is. / No, he isn't.
Past: Alpha was thirteen last year.
3Je retiens
Je retiens
Présent : I am / you are / he, she, it is / we, you, they are.
Contractions : I'm, you're, he's, she's, it's, we're, they're ; isn't, aren't.
Négation : sujet + be + not. Question : Be + sujet ? Réponse courte : Yes, I am. / No, she isn't.
Passé : I, he, she, it was ; you, we, they were (wasn't, weren't).
On dit I am 13, I am hungry, I am cold : l'âge et les sensations se disent avec to be.
There is + singulier, there are + pluriel = il y a.
4Erreurs fréquentes
- Dire « I is » ou « he are » : avec I on met toujours am, avec he, she, it on met is.
- Traduire l'âge avec have : on dit « I am fourteen », jamais « I have fourteen years ».
- Contracter dans une réponse courte positive : on dit « Yes, she is », pas « Yes, she's ».
- Oublier l'article devant un métier : « My mother is a teacher », pas « My mother is teacher ».
