Leçon 14 sur 15
Asking for and giving directions (demander et indiquer son chemin)
« Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the hospital, please? »
» Fatoumata vient à son secours : « Go straight on, then take the second street on the left. The hospital is opposite the big mosque. » Le visiteur la remercie : « Thank you very much! »
2Je comprends
1. Demander son chemin
On commence toujours par attirer poliment l'attention : Excuse me (pardon, excusez-moi). Puis on pose la question :
| Formule | Niveau de politesse |
|---|---|
| Where is the post office, please? | simple |
| How can I get to the market, please? | courant |
| Is there a bank near here? | pour trouver un lieu proche |
| Could you tell me the way to the stadium, please? | très poli |
| Could you tell me where the station is? | très poli (attention à l'ordre : *where the station is*) |
On termine toujours par un remerciement : *Thank you (very much)! / Thanks a lot!* L'autre répond : *You're welcome. / Not at all.*
Si l'on n'a pas compris : *Sorry, could you repeat that, please?* ou *Could you speak more slowly, please?*
Go! Turn! Cross!
| Anglais | Français |
|---|---|
| Go straight on / Go straight ahead | allez tout droit |
| Turn left / Turn right | tournez à gauche / à droite |
| Take the first street on the left | prenez la première rue à gauche |
| Take the second turning on the right | prenez la deuxième à droite |
| Go along this street | suivez cette rue |
| Cross the road / the bridge | traversez la route / le pont |
| Go past the school | passez devant l'école |
| Go up / down the street | montez / descendez la rue |
| Walk to the end of the road | marchez jusqu'au bout de la route |
| At the crossroads, turn right | au carrefour, tournez à droite |
| At the roundabout, … | au rond-point, … |
| It's on your left / right | c'est sur votre gauche / droite |
La négation de l'impératif se fait avec Don't : *Don't cross here, it's dangerous.*
3. Situer un lieu : les prépositions de lieu
| Préposition | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| next to | à côté de | *The bank is next to the pharmacy.* |
| opposite | en face de | *The hospital is opposite the mosque.* |
| between … and … | entre … et … | *The shop is between the school and the bakery.* |
| behind | derrière | *The market is behind the station.* |
| in front of | devant | *The bus stops in front of the town hall.* |
| on the corner of | au coin de | *The café is on the corner of the street.* |
| near | près de | *Is there a bank near here?* |
| far from | loin de | *The airport is far from the centre.* |
| at the end of | au bout de | *The church is at the end of the road.* |
- J'enchaîne avec first, then, after that, when you get to…
It's on your left, next to the bank.
Exemple
On the map: from "You are here" to the market.
Answer: Go straight on to the crossroads. Then turn right. The market is on your left, opposite the bank.
Exemple
A dialogue at the bus station.
Visitor: Excuse me, how can I get to the post office, please?
Fatoumata: Go straight on past the crossroads. The post office is on your left, opposite the hospital.
Visitor: Is it far from here?
Fatoumata: No, it's about five minutes on foot.
Visitor: Thank you very much!
Fatoumata: You're welcome.
5. Distance et moyen de transport
- *Is it far?* — No, it's near. / Yes, it's quite far.
- *How far is it?* — It's about 500 metres. / It's about ten minutes on foot / by taxi.
- *How long does it take?* — It takes twenty minutes.
- Moyens : on foot (à pied), by taxi, by bus, by motorbike, by car.
3Je retiens
Je retiens
Demander : Excuse me, where is…? / How can I get to…? / Could you tell me the way to…, please?
Indiquer (impératif) : go straight on, turn left / right, take the first street on the left, cross the road, go past…
Prépositions : next to, opposite, between … and …, behind, in front of, on the corner of, near, at the end of.
Situer : It's on your left / right.
Distance : Is it far? How far is it? It's ten minutes on foot / by taxi.
Remercier : Thank you very much! — You're welcome.
Could you tell me where the bank is? », pas « where is the bank? » après « Could you tell me ».
- Dire « in foot » ou « by foot » : on dit « on foot », mais « by taxi », « by bus ».
