Expressing wishes and regrets about the past

  • 50 min

Lansana soupire : « I wish I had a computer.

Puis il ajoute : « I wish I had studied harder last year.

Le grand-père sourit et dit à son tour : « If only the rains came earlier this year! And I wish your cousins would visit us more often. »

2Je comprends

  • souhait sur le présent → past simple ;
  • regret sur le passé → past perfect ;
  • I don't have a computer. (présent)
  • I am not tall. (présent)
  • I didn't revise. (passé)
  • I lost my phone. (passé)
  • He always comes late. (agacement)
Souhait ou regret
  • I wish I had a computer.
  • I wish I were taller.
  • I wish I had revised.
  • If only I hadn't lost my phone!
  • I wish he would come on time.

2. Souhait sur le présent : wish / if only + past simple

On souhaite qu'une situation présente soit différente.

*I wish I lived in Conakry.* (je n'y habite pas)

*She wishes she knew the answer.* (elle ne la connaît pas)

*If only it didn't rain so much!*

Avec be, on emploie souvent were à toutes les personnes, surtout à l'écrit : *I wish I were taller. If only he were here.* (was se rencontre à l'oral.)

Avec can → could : *I wish I could speak Chinese.* (je ne sais pas le parler)

3. Regret sur le passé : wish / if only + past perfect

*I wish I had studied harder.* (je n'ai pas assez étudié)

*I wish I hadn't eaten so much.* (j'ai trop mangé)

*If only we had left earlier! We wouldn't have missed the ferry.*

*She wishes she had accepted the job.*

Avec could : *I wish I could have come.* (je n'ai pas pu venir, je le regrette)

Le sens est proche de should have + participe passé : I should have studied harder = I wish I had studied harder. Mais should have insiste sur l'erreur, wish sur le sentiment de regret.

4. Souhait de changement, agacement : wish + would

*I wish you would stop talking during the lesson.*

*I wish my neighbour wouldn't play loud music at night.*

*I wish it would stop raining!* (on souhaite que ça change)

Règle : on ne dit pas ~~I wish I would~~ (on ne peut pas s'agacer de soi-même) ; on dit I wish I could ou I wish I + past simple.

5. If only : un wish plus fort

If only I had listened to my mother!

If only I could see my father again!

If only I had known, I would have helped you. (type 3)

6. Les autres expressions utiles

  • I'd rather + sujet + past simple (je préférerais que) : *I'd rather you stayed here.*
  • It's (high) time + sujet + past simple (il est grand temps que) : *It's time we went home.* *It's high time you started revising.*
  • Wish + to + verbe = vouloir, formel : I wish to speak to the headmaster. (= I want to, poliment)
  • Wish + personne + nom = souhaiter quelque chose à quelqu'un : I wish you good luck. We wish you a happy new year.
Époque du souhaitStructureExemple
présentwish / if only + past simple (were, could)I wish I had more time.
passéwish / if only + past perfectI wish I had taken the bus.
changement souhaité chez l'autrewish + sujet + would + baseI wish he would listen.

Méthode

Pour réécrire une phrase avec I wish ou If only :

  2. Présent → past simple (were, could) ; passé → past perfect (had + p.p.) ; comportement d'un autre → would + base.
  3. J'inverse la polarité : une phrase affirmative devient négative et inversement (I am late → I wish I weren't late).
  4. J'adapte le sujet (I, he, they…) et je garde le reste de la phrase.
  5. Je vérifie : jamais « I wish I would », jamais de present après wish.

Exemple

Rewrite these sentences with « I wish ».

a) I don't speak English fluently.

b) I didn't go to my cousin's wedding in Kankan.

c) My little brother always takes my things without asking.

a) Situation présente, négative → past simple, affirmative : I wish I spoke English fluently. (ou I wish I could speak English fluently.)

b) Situation passée, négative → past perfect, affirmative : I wish I had gone to my cousin's wedding in Kankan.

c) Comportement agaçant d'un autre → would, à la forme négative : I wish my little brother wouldn't take my things without asking.

Exemple

Rewrite with « If only » and add a consequence.

« Alpha spent all his money. Now he can't buy his school books. »

Conséquence irréelle au présent → conditionnel mixte : would be able to / could.

Answer: If only Alpha hadn't spent all his money! He could buy his school books now.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

I wish / If only + past simple = souhait sur le présent (I wish I had a car ; I wish I were taller ; I wish I could swim).

I wish / If only + past perfect = regret sur le passé (I wish I had studied ; If only I hadn't lied!).

I wish + sujet + would + base = souhait de changement, agacement (I wish he would stop).

Jamais « I wish I would » ; jamais de present après wish.

It's time + past simple ; I'd rather + sujet + past simple.

I wish you good luck = je te souhaite bonne chance.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Mettre le présent après wish : on écrit « I wish I had a bicycle », pas « I wish I have a bicycle ».
  • Utiliser le past simple pour un regret sur le passé : « I wish I had gone », pas « I wish I went » quand on parle d'hier.
  • Oublier d'inverser la forme : réalité « I shouted at him » → « I wish I hadn't shouted at him ».
  • Écrire « I wish I would » : on écrit « I wish I could… » ou « I wish I + past simple ».
