Leçon 12 sur 15

Making apologies and granting forgiveness

  • 45 min
  • 6 exercices corrigés
  • 1 schéma
  • QCM de 5 questions

À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :

  • Présenter des excuses avec sorry, apologise, excuse me, forgive me
  • Construire correctement apologise for + V-ing et I'm sorry for / that
  • Accorder son pardon ou rassurer (That's all right, Never mind, Apology accepted)

« Ibrahima: I'm sorry I'm late, sir. The road was flooded.

Teacher: That's all right. Sit down quickly. »

« Ibrahima: Oh, I'm so sorry! It was an accident. Please forgive me.

Aïssatou: Never mind. It's not your fault. »

« We apologise for any inconvenience caused. »

Au BAC, la question « What would you say in this situation?

2Je comprends

1. Excuse me ou sorry ?

Excuse me, where is the post office? Excuse me, can I come in?
  • Sorry / I'm sorry s'emploie après avoir causé un problème (retard, erreur, maladresse). Sorry, I didn't see you.
  • Pardon? / Sorry? (intonation montante) : pour demander de répéter. Pardon? Could you say that again?

RegistreExpression
Très familierSorry! / Oops, sorry!
CourantI'm sorry. / I'm so sorry. / I'm really sorry.
Courant, avec la fauteI'm sorry for being late. / I'm sorry (that) I broke your pen.
SoutenuI apologise for… / Please forgive me for… / I owe you an apology.
Très soutenu, écritPlease accept my (sincere) apologies for… / We apologise for any inconvenience.

On peut renforcer : I'm terribly sorry. I'm awfully sorry. I do apologise. On peut aussi reconnaître sa faute : It was my fault. I didn't mean to (hurt you). It won't happen again.

3. La grammaire des excuses

  • be sorry for + V-ing ou + nom : I'm sorry for breaking your cup. I'm sorry for the noise.
  • be sorry (that) + phrase : I'm sorry (that) I forgot our appointment.
  • be sorry to + base verbale : excuse pour ce qu'on fait maintenant ou va faire : I'm sorry to disturb you. (désolé de vous déranger)
  • apologise (to someone) for + V-ing / nom : I apologise to you for my behaviour. He apologised for arriving late. (apologize en orthographe américaine)
  • forgive someone for + V-ing : Please forgive me for shouting.
  • apology est le nom : Please accept my apology / my apologies.

That's all right. / That's OK.I forgive you.
Never mind.Apology accepted.
No problem. / Don't worry (about it).Let's forget it.
It doesn't matter. It's all in the past.
It's not your fault. No hard feelings.

I'm sorry, but that's not good enough. / I need some time. / Please don't do it again.

  1. 1Je m'excuse : I'm really sorry.
  2. 2Je nomme la faute : I'm sorry for breaking your phone.
  3. 3J'explique sans me justifier à l'excès : I dropped it by accident.
  4. 4Je propose de réparer : I'll pay for the repair.
  5. 5Je promets : It won't happen again.
  6. 6L'autre accorde son pardon : That's all right. I forgive you.

Pour réagir à une situation « What would you say? » :

  3. Je construis la phrase : sorry for + V-ing, sorry (that) + phrase, apologise for + V-ing.
  4. Si on me demande de répondre à une excuse, je choisis selon la gravité : never mind, that's all right, I forgive you, apology accepted.
  5. J'écris une phrase complète et polie.

Exemple

What would you say in these situations?

a) You want to ask a stranger the way to the bus station.

b) You stepped on someone's foot in a crowded taxi.

c) Your friend apologises because she forgot to return your book. It is not very important.

a) Avant de déranger → Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the bus station, please?

b) Après une maladresse → Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't do it on purpose.

c) Petite faute, on rassure → Never mind. / Don't worry about it. You can bring it tomorrow.

Exemple

Rewrite each sentence using the word in brackets.

a) « I'm sorry I lost your pen, » said Sékou. (apologise)

b) I'm sorry that I spoke rudely to you. (forgive)

c) The school is sorry that the trip was cancelled. (apologies)

a) apologise for + V-ing, au passé car c'est rapporté : Sékou apologised for losing my pen.

b) forgive + personne + for + V-ing : Please forgive me for speaking rudely to you.

c) Registre officiel, nom apologies : The school offers its apologies for the cancellation of the trip. / Please accept the school's apologies for cancelling the trip.

  1. Excuse et faute : I am writing to apologise for missing your birthday party.
  2. Explication courte : My mother was ill and I had to take her to the hospital.
  3. Proposition de réparation : I would like to invite you to lunch next Saturday.
  4. Promesse et formule finale : I hope you will forgive me. It won't happen again. Best wishes, …

I'm sorry for + V-ing / nom ; I'm sorry (that) + phrase ; I'm sorry to disturb you.

I apologise (to someone) for + V-ing ; Please forgive me for + V-ing ; Please accept my apologies.

Apologise = verbe ; apology = nom.

Accorder son pardon : That's all right, Never mind, No problem, Don't worry, It doesn't matter, It's not your fault, I forgive you, Apology accepted.

  • Mettre la base verbale après for : « I apologise for being late », pas « I apologise for be late ».
  • Confondre apologise et apology : « I apologise » (verbe), « my apologies » (nom), pas « I apology ».
  • Écrire « I excuse myself » (calque du français) : on écrit « I apologise » ou « I'm sorry ».
