Gerund or infinitive (gérondif ou infinitif)

*« I enjoy reading novels. I want to become a journalist. I am good at writing, and I hope to study in a big university. I went to the library to borrow a book about Guinea. »*

Son camarade Ousmane relit et demande : « Pourquoi enjoy reading avec -ing, mais want to become avec to ? Et pourquoi good at writing ? »

Au BEPC, les exercices « Put the verb in the correct form: gerund or infinitive » sont très fréquents.

Swimming is good for your health. (La natation / nager…)
  • L'infinitif avec to : to + base verbale. *I want to swim.*

Il existe aussi l'infinitif sans to (la base seule), après les modaux (can, must, should) et après let et make : My father let me go. She made me laugh.

2. Le gérondif : quand l'employer ?

a) Comme sujet de la phrase : Smoking is dangerous. Reading helps you learn.

b) Après une préposition (at, in, of, about, for, without, before, after, by…). C'est une règle sans exception :

*She is good at drawing.* *Thank you for helping me.* *He left without saying goodbye.* *Wash your hands before eating.*

Attention à look forward to et be used to, où to est une préposition : *I look forward to seeing you.*

VerbeSensExemple
enjoyaimer, apprécierI enjoy dancing.
finishfinirShe finished cooking.
avoidéviterAvoid drinking dirty water.
mindvoir un inconvénientDo you mind waiting?
suggestsuggérerHe suggested going to Dalaba.
keepcontinuer àKeep walking!
practises'entraîner àThey practise speaking English.
give upabandonnerMy uncle gave up smoking.
can't standne pas supporterI can't stand waiting.

d) Après certaines expressions : It's no use…, It's worth…, How about…?, What about…? : How about going to the beach?

3. L'infinitif avec to : quand l'employer ?

a) Après certains verbes qui regardent souvent vers l'avenir (souhait, décision, projet) :

VerbeSensExemple
wantvouloirI want to learn.
decidedéciderThey decided to leave.
hopeespérerWe hope to win.
planprévoirShe plans to travel.
promisepromettreHe promised to help.
learnapprendreI learned to swim.
needavoir besoinYou need to rest.
agree / refuseaccepter / refuserHe refused to pay.
would likeaimeraitI would like to visit Labé.

b) Après un adjectif : *It's easy to understand.* *I'm happy to see you.* *It is important to protect the forest.*

c) Pour exprimer le but (« pour », « afin de ») : *I went to the market to buy tomatoes.* On ne dit jamais ~~for buy~~ ni ~~for to buy~~.

d) Après verbe + personne : want, ask, tell, advise, allow + personne + to : *My mother wants me to study medicine.*

e) Après un mot interrogatif : *I don't know how to swim. Tell me where to go.*

Gérondif (V-ing)
  • Après une préposition : good at drawing
  • enjoy, finish, avoid, mind, suggest
  • Sujet de la phrase : Reading is useful
  • Souvent une activité, un fait
Infinitif (to + V)
  • Pour exprimer le but : to buy bread
  • want, decide, hope, plan, promise

4. Les verbes qui acceptent les deux

Sans changement de sens : like, love, hate, prefer, start, begin, continue.

It started raining / It started to rain. I like playing / I like to play.

(Mais would like est toujours suivi de to : I would like to go.)

Avec changement de sens

Verbe+ gérondif+ infinitif
stoparrêter une activité : He stopped smoking. (il ne fume plus)s'arrêter pour faire : He stopped to smoke. (il s'est arrêté pour fumer)
rememberse souvenir d'avoir fait (passé) : I remember meeting him.penser à faire (avenir) : Remember to lock the door.
forgetoublier avoir fait : I'll never forget visiting Mali.oublier de faire : Don't forget to call me.
tryessayer, tester : Try adding salt.s'efforcer de : I tried to lift the bag, but it was too heavy.

Méthode

Pour choisir entre gérondif et infinitif :

  2. Si c'est une préposition (at, of, for, without, before, after, about, in, by), je mets le gérondif.
  4. Si c'est un adjectif, ou si j'exprime un but (« pour »), je mets to + base.

Exemple

Put the verbs in the correct form: « Mariama decided (study) medicine because she is interested in (help) people. »

« decided » est suivi de l'infinitif → to study.

« interested in » : in est une préposition → gérondif : helping.

Answer: Mariama decided to study medicine because she is interested in helping people.

Exemple

Put the verbs in the correct form: « Sékou stopped (buy) some water because he was thirsty. »

Answer: Sékou stopped to buy some water.

Exemple

Put the verbs in the correct form: « (Wash) your hands regularly helps (avoid) (catch) diseases. »

Sujet de la phrase → gérondif : Washing.

Après help, on met la base ou to + base : helps (to) avoid.

Après avoid → gérondif : catching.

Answer: Washing your hands regularly helps (to) avoid catching diseases.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Gérondif (V-ing) : sujet de la phrase ; après toute préposition (good at, interested in, without, before, after, look forward to) ; après enjoy, finish, avoid, mind, suggest, keep, practise, give up.

Infinitif avec to : après want, decide, hope, plan, promise, learn, need, refuse, would like ; après un adjectif (easy to) ; pour le but (to buy = pour acheter).

Infinitif sans to : après les modaux, let et make.

Les deux, même sens : like, love, hate, start, begin.

Sens différent : stop, remember, forget, try.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Mettre « for » devant l'infinitif de but : « I came to see you », pas « I came for see you » ni « for to see ».
  • Mettre la base après une préposition : « Thank you for helping me », pas « for help me ».
  • Mettre to après enjoy : « I enjoy dancing », pas « I enjoy to dance ».
  • Se tromper avec look forward to : « I look forward to seeing you », pas « to see you ».
