« What's the matter? »
Ibrahima a appris l'anglais au collège. Il essaie de répondre : « I have… a headache. I have a fever since two days. » Le médecin comprend, sourit et corrige gentiment : « Oh, you have had a fever for two days. » Puis il conseille : « You should rest and drink a lot of water. We must do a test for malaria. »

| How long have you been ill? | I have been ill for three days / since Monday. |
| Where does it hurt? | It hurts here, in my stomach. |
| Do you feel tired? | Yes, I feel very weak. |
Remarque de grammaire : pour dire « depuis », on emploie le present perfect avec for ou since (leçon 3) : I have had a cough for a week.
- should / shouldn't (conseil) : You should wash your hands with soap.
- must / mustn't (obligation, interdiction) : You mustn't drink dirty water.
- l'impératif : Wash your hands before eating. Don't leave stagnant water near the house.
Vocabulaire de l'hygiène : soap (savon), clean water / drinking water (eau potable), to wash (laver), to boil (faire bouillir), to brush your teeth, a mosquito net (moustiquaire), stagnant water (eau stagnante), rubbish (ordures), germs (microbes), a toilet / latrine, to cover your mouth when you cough.
6. Un texte d'information
*Malaria is a serious disease in Guinea. It is transmitted by the bite of some mosquitoes (Anopheles). The symptoms are fever, headache and tiredness. To protect yourself, you should sleep under a mosquito net and remove stagnant water around your house, because mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. If you have a fever, you must go to the health centre quickly.*
- Je dis depuis quand avec le present perfect : I have had it for two days / since Sunday.
Pour donner un conseil : You should… / You must… / Don't… + base verbale.
Exemple
J'ai mal au ventre → I have a stomachache.
J'ai de la fièvre depuis hier → present perfect avec since : I have had a fever since yesterday.
Answer: I have a stomachache and I have had a fever since yesterday.
Exemple
Give three pieces of advice to avoid cholera.
On conseille avec should, must et l'impératif.
You should always wash your hands with soap and water.
You must drink clean or boiled water.
Don't eat fruit without washing it.

Je retiens
Maux : a headache, a stomachache, a toothache, a sore throat ; « My leg hurts ».
Symptômes : a fever, a cough, a cold, diarrhoea ; I feel tired / dizzy.
Maladies : malaria, cholera, measles, typhoid ; ill / sick, healthy.

Chez le médecin : What's the matter? — I have… ; depuis : I have had… for / since…

4Erreurs fréquentes
- Traduire « j'ai mal à la tête » mot à mot : on dit « I have a headache », pas « I have bad at my head ».
- Utiliser le présent avec since : « I have had a fever since Monday », pas « I have a fever since Monday ».
- Confondre medicine (médicament, ou la médecine) et doctor (le médecin) : « The doctor gave me some medicine. »
