Leçon 14 sur 20

Jobs and professions (métiers et professions)

  • Parler de mes projets professionnels avec want to, would like to, be going to

What do you want to be in the future? »

Sékou répond : « I want to be a mechanic, like my uncle. He repairs cars in his garage. »

Hawa dit : « I would like to become a midwife, because I want to help women in my village. »

Alpha hésite : « I don't know yet. Maybe an engineer in a mining company. »

What would you like to do later?

On dit an devant un son voyelle : an engineer, an electrician.

2. Les lieux de travail (workplaces)

*A doctor works in a hospital or a health centre. A teacher works in a school. A farmer works in a field. A mechanic works in a garage. A miner works in a mine. A trader works in a market or a shop. A journalist works for a newspaper or a radio station.*

3. Décrire un métier

Avec une relative (leçon 9) : A carpenter is a person who makes furniture with wood. A midwife is a woman who helps women to give birth.

A fisherman goes to sea early in the morning. He catches fish and sells them at the port.

Vocabulaire utile : to earn money / a salary (gagner de l'argent, un salaire), to work full-time / part-time, to be unemployed (être au chômage), a company / a firm (une entreprise), a boss (un patron), to be self-employed (travailler à son compte), training (formation), skills (compétences), qualifications (diplômes).

Adjectifs pour juger un métier : interesting / boring, well-paid / badly paid, useful, difficult, tiring (fatigant), dangerous, creative.

4. Parler de ses projets

StructureExemple

would like to + baseI would like to work in a hospital.

hope to + baseI hope to open my own shop.
be interested in + V-ingI'm interested in repairing machines.
be good at + nom ou V-ingI'm good at maths.

Pour justifier : because…, I like…, I want to help…, It's a useful job.

  2. 2Je dis où on l'exerce : Nurses work in hospitals and health centres.
  3. 3Je décris ce qu'on y fait : They look after sick people and give injections.
  4. 4J'explique pourquoi je l'ai choisi : because I want to help people in my town.
  5. 5Je dis comment j'y arriverai : I'm going to study science at the lycée and go to a nursing school.

5. Comparer des métiers

On utilise les comparatifs : *A doctor earns more money than a nurse. Being a miner is more dangerous than being a teacher. A tailor's job is less tiring than a farmer's job.*

Méthode

Pour décrire un métier en anglais :

  1. Je définis le métier avec une relative : A … is a person who…
  2. Je dis où la personne travaille : He / She works in…
  4. Je donne mon avis avec des adjectifs : It is a useful but tiring job.

Exemple

Describe the job of a tailor.

Définition avec une relative : A tailor is a person who makes clothes.

Lieu : He works in a workshop, often near the market.

Tâches au present simple : He takes the customers' measurements, cuts the cloth and sews it with a sewing machine.

Avis : It is a creative job, and tailors are very busy before the big celebrations.

Exemple

Complete with a or an: « My father is ... engineer and my mother is ... teacher. My uncle is ... electrician. »

Answer: My father is an engineer and my mother is a teacher. My uncle is an electrician.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Métiers : doctor, nurse, midwife, teacher, farmer, fisherman, tailor, carpenter, mechanic, engineer, miner, trader, driver, journalist.

Toujours a / an devant un métier : She is a nurse. He is an engineer.

Définir : A … is a person who… ; lieu : works in / at / for…

Projets : I want to be…, I would like to become…, I'm going to…, I hope to…

Goûts et capacités : I'm interested in + V-ing ; I'm good at + nom ou V-ing.

Vocabulaire : a salary, to earn, unemployed, self-employed, training, skills, well-paid.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Oublier l'article : « My sister is a teacher », pas « My sister is teacher ».
  • Écrire « I want become » : on écrit « I want to become ».
