« Excuse me, when does the next bus to Nzérékoré leave? How much is a ticket? How long does the journey take? »
2Je comprends
1. Les moyens de transport (means of transport)
| Anglais | Français | Anglais | Français |
|---|---|---|---|
On dit go by + moyen de transport, sans article : by car, by bus, by plane, by boat, by train. Mais on foot (à pied).
Avec un article ou un possessif, on emploie in (voiture, taxi) ou on (bus, train, avion, moto, vélo) : in my father's car, on the bus, on a motorbike.
2. Les lieux et les personnes du voyage
a bus station / a motor park (gare routière), a railway station (gare), an airport, a port / a harbour, a ticket office (guichet), a timetable (horaires), a ticket (billet) : a single ticket (aller simple), a return ticket (aller-retour).
a passenger (passager), a driver (chauffeur), a pilot, a traveller (voyageur), luggage (bagages, indénombrable), a suitcase (valise), a bag.
3. Les verbes du voyage
to travel (voyager), to leave (partir) → left, to arrive in (une ville, un pays) / arrive at (un lieu précis), to get on / get off (monter / descendre d'un bus, d'un train), to get in / get out of (monter / descendre d'une voiture, d'un taxi), to catch / miss the bus (attraper / rater), to book (réserver), to take (un moyen de transport : take a taxi), a journey (un trajet), a trip (une excursion, un voyage court).
The journey from Conakry to Nzérékoré is very long.
4. Les expressions utiles
Acheter un billet et se renseigner
- When does the next bus to Kankan leave? — It leaves at 7 a.m.
- How much is a ticket to Labé? — It's … francs.
- How long does the journey take? — It takes about … hours.
- A single / return ticket to Boké, please.
- Where can I buy a ticket?
Demander et indiquer un chemin
- Excuse me, how can I get to the post office? / Where is the bus station, please?
- Go straight on (tout droit). Turn left / right (tournez à gauche / à droite). Take the first street on the left.
- It's next to / opposite / between / near / behind…
- It's about five minutes on foot.
5. Raconter un voyage
On utilise le simple past pour les événements et le past continuous pour le décor (leçon 2), avec des mots de liaison : first, then, after that, finally.
*Last August, I travelled to Nzérékoré with my cousin. We left Conakry at dawn. First, we took a bus to Kankan. The road was long, and while we were crossing the savannah, we saw many villages. Then we took a bush taxi to Nzérékoré. Finally, we arrived late at night.*
- J'attire l'attention poliment : Excuse me…
- Je pose une question précise : When…? How much…? How long…? Where…? How can I get to…?
- Pour indiquer un chemin, j'enchaîne des impératifs : Go straight on, turn left, take the second street…
- Je situe le lieu avec une préposition : next to, opposite, between, near.
- Je termine poliment : Thank you very much. — You're welcome.
Exemple
Complete with by, on or in: « Alpha goes to school ... foot, but his sister goes ... bus. Yesterday they went to the market ... their uncle's car. »
À pied : on foot. En bus, sans article : by bus. Avec un possessif et une voiture : in their uncle's car.
Answer: Alpha goes to school on foot, but his sister goes by bus. Yesterday they went to the market in their uncle's car.
Exemple
Write the questions for the answers.
a) « The train leaves at 9. »
b) « The bus stops in Mamou. »
c) « The journey takes six hours. »
a) Question sur l'heure : What time / When does the train leave?
b) Question sur le lieu : Where does the bus stop?
c) Question sur la durée : How long does the journey take?
3Je retiens
Je retiens

4Erreurs fréquentes
- Mettre un article après by : « by bus », pas « by the bus » ; et « on foot », pas « by foot ».
- Dire « arrive to » : on dit « arrive in Kankan » (ville) ou « arrive at the station » (lieu précis).
- Mettre luggage au pluriel : « My luggage is heavy », pas « my luggages are ».
- Confondre travel (verbe) et journey (nom) : « The journey was long », pas « The travel was long ».

*Last July, I went to Dalaba with my family. We travelled by bush taxi. First, we left Conakry early in the morning. The road was beautiful, with mountains and green trees. While we were driving near Kindia, we stopped to buy fruit. We arrived in Dalaba in the afternoon. It was cool and I visited the waterfalls. I really enjoyed this trip.*
